Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe During the July 4th Fireworks
Dogs and cats are naturally afraid of loud noises. The sounds trigger their nervous system, making them anxious or afraid. Hiding or running away is a survival instinct.
Cats and dogs experience their environment through their senses — nose, ears, eyes. The 4th of July celebrations can be overwhelming to them.
Here are some tips to help keep your pets calm, making the celebration easier for both of you.
Re-location: Ideally arrange to have your pet in a place where there won’t be loud fireworks displays — a friend’s or relative’s home or pet day care.
Accommodation: Not able to take your pet away from the fireworks, the n place your pets in a travel crate to help them feel safe. Place the crate in the quietest part of the home (e.g.: basement) and turn on the TV or radio to mute outside sounds. It can also help to take your dog for a long walk before the fireworks to expend excess energy and keep her in a calm state.
Communication: Staying with your pet during the fireworks, then speak to them in a calming tone that everything is alright to help them relax. Our pets take cues from us and if we show that there is nothing to worry about, they will remain calm as well.
Medication: If you have tried all the above and your pet is normally stressed and anxious, talk to your vet about medications or if CBD can be a healthy alternative.
